Mendelssohn’s 200th birthday bash begins with his celebratory music from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which was the source for the ever-popular “Wedding March.” Theatrical music continues with a suite from Walton’s delicate ballet based on Bach ‘greatest hits”—Sheep May Safely Graze and others. Mendelssohn was an avid champion of Bach’s musical genius. Canadian-born 2006 International Web Concert Hall winner Joel Hastings dances across the keys for Bach’s rapid and intricate Piano Concerto in D minor. Mendelssohn’s 5th “Reformation” Symphony is a rousing work featuring the music of Martin Luther and concluding with the thunderous “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.”
